Preventing Frozen Pipes Through a Denver Winter
Practical steps Denver homeowners can take to keep supply lines from freezing during the worst cold snaps.
Why Denver pipes freeze
Denver's freeze-thaw cycle is harder on plumbing than the steady cold of more northern cities. Pipes in unheated garages, crawlspaces, and exterior walls can drop below 32°F overnight even when the daytime high is in the 40s.
Three things to do before the next cold snap
- Disconnect garden hoses and shut off the interior bib for any non-frost-proof exterior faucet.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so house heat can reach the pipes.
- Insulate exposed runs in crawlspaces and unconditioned basements with closed-cell foam sleeves.
When to call
If a faucet won't run during a cold snap, the supply line is likely already frozen. Don't wait for it to burst — call us and we'll thaw it safely without damaging the pipe.
